Launch of the Academic Hub with Cllr Tony Dyer, Head of Bristol City Council

The UoB academic hub for serious violence was launched in September 2024 at the University of Bristol. This included an opening address and endorsement from Cllr Tony Dyer, the Leader of Bristol City Council, who noted the importance of research and evidence-led work in the area of violence prevention. Christina Gray, BCCs Director of Communities and Public Health, and Dr Jade Levell (leading the SYV academic hub) both discussed the 1 year collaborative project plan which they have co-developed in partnership and with the wider funded academic team (Dr Clare Torrible, Prof Jo Staines, Prof Roddy Brett). The attendees included key members of Bristol One City and the SYV Board. Thirty academics attended from diverse disciplines including criminology, law, peace and conflict studies, health, emergency medicine, epidemiology, data science, philosophy, social work, and more. We were also joined by academics from UWE. There was a sense of openness and collaboration.

Completion of a ‘rapid review’ of evidence around SYV in Bristol

The rapid review was conducted over summer and delivered to the board in September 2024 when the team presented the key findings. It has also been delivered to the local Police and Crime Commissioners Office and has helped inform a national Home Office review currently being conducted. Feedback from local grassroots organisations has been positive. Nina Skubala, head of the One City office, commented that, “The rapid review …will facilitate decision-making and much-needed action to prevent the tragic and wasteful outcomes of youth violence”.
